Last Wednesday, I drove all the way to Paris.

It wasn’t for business.

It was to support my wife at her very first live performance in a Parisian theater.

She’s a singer, pianist, and songwriter, and she had been preparing for this night for weeks.

This concert was special because two talent scouts had announced they’d be attending.

They were searching for fresh voices for a major music competition.

The theater was full.

The energy was electric.

Friends and family from all over France came to see her perform for the first time.

Even friends from Belgium showed up.. people I hadn’t seen in six years.

When she started playing, it felt like the whole room froze in awe.

And I was sitting there thinking, Wow. This is it. This is her moment.

After the concert, we celebrated with a small after-show party.

Everyone was full of joy, laughter, and excitement.

Then the moment came.

Someone asked, β€œDid the scouts show up?”

Silence.

They didn’t.

Neither of them had come.

No message. No excuse. Just absence.

At first, there was a wave of disappointment.

You could feel it in the air.

We talked about it for two days.

Here’s a simple structure you can use whenever you face a setback.. whether it’s a failed product launch, a lost deal, or a personal disappointment.

1. Feel it fully.

Don’t rush to β€œstay positive.”

Let the emotion exist.

Sit with it.

Write about it.

Talk about it.

This is how your brain processes reality.

Suppressing pain only keeps it longer.

When you acknowledge the emotion, you take control over it.

2. Find the message.

Every challenge contains a lesson.

Ask yourself:

  • What is this trying to teach me?

  • Where did I lose focus or control?

  • What can I improve next time?

This reflection turns a painful experience into wisdom.

3. Flip the energy.

Once you’ve processed and understood it, use the emotion as fuel.

Frustration = Focus.

Disappointment = Drive.

Rejection = Redirection.

Your emotions are energy.

You choose how to direct them.

That’s what happened after the Paris concert.

The scouts didn’t show up.
